This is just a little reminder from the House of Sass that "Under the Stars...with Morgan" is on THIS SATURDAY! Hurrah!
Now, about this pesk weather. Depite the rain, we are still planning on having this night of fabulous movie watching...however, if it's still pouring on Friday afternoon, we might have to consider postponing the event till a later, less damp weekend.
So: if you don't hear from us - the Outdoor Cinema is still on! You'll get a message if we have to can it, and we'll let you know the events new date.
Now, here's a sneak peak at the movie ballot list/program which those attending will have to vote on. The most popular films will be screened throughout the night. Enjoy!
Casablanca (1942)
Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman
Director: Michael Curtiz
Arguably the finest coming together of the classic studio system’s personnel. Bogart and Bergman are unforgettable as ex-lovers whose paths meet at exactly the wrong time. Set against the backdrop of World War Two Africa, Casablanca is funny, tense, romantic and poignant.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Starring: Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis
Director: Billy Wilder
The greatest Marilyn Monroe film of them all. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play down and out musicians, who hide out from the mafia in an all-girl band… as girls! Not only that, but Tony simultaneously poses as a young millionaire to try and woo Marilyn. Screwball comedy at its finest.
North by Northwest (1959)
Starring: Cary Grant, Eva Marie-Saint
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
An Alfred Hicthcock favourite. A grey suit-clad Cary Grant is chased across country by a band of ruthless spies. Famous scenes include the cropduster attack, the chase over Mount Rushmore and the riot at the art auction.
The Party (1968)
Starring: Peter Sellers
Director: Blake Edwards
Peter Sellers stars as Hrundi V. Bakshi, a clueless Indian actor wandering aimlessly through a sixties Hollywood party. A colourful collection of sight gags culminates in a bubble-drenched psychedelic freak-out… with an elephant.
This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Starring: Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer
Director: Rob Reiner
The greatest mockumentary of them all! Watch as Britain’s dumbest rock band struggles their way through the twilight of their career.
The Breakfast Club (1985)
Starring: Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald
Director: John Hughes
Students from each teenage sub-culture are forced to spend detention together. Will the nerd win the cool girl’s heart? Will the jock learn that bullying is just a mask for insecurity? Watch and see!
The Goonies (1985)
Starring: Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman
Director: Richard Donner
Pirates + BMX bikes + Cyndi Lauper + fat kid = the best kids adventure film of all time.
Willow (1988)
Starring: Val Kilmer, Warwick Davis
Director: Ron Howard
And you thought Top Gun was the only movie were Val Kilmer starred opposite a midget.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Starring: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan
Director: Rob Reiner
Romantic comedy done right. I’ll watch the movie she’s watching.
Point Break (1991)
Keanu. Patrick. Sky-diving.
Aladdin (1992)
Funnier than Beauty and the Beast, less violent than The Lion King, more historically accurate than Mulan and less quasi new age philosophy than Pocahontas. Oh, and Robin Williams is the genie.
Cool Runnings (1993)
Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time!
RIP John Candy.
So… I Married An Axe Murderer (1993)
Starring: Mike Meyers, Nancy Travis, Anthony LaPaglia
Director: Thomas Schlamme
This movie features “I believe I ordered the large cappuccino”, “Come, let us dance like children of the night!”, “We have a piper down!”, “Woman, woah man!” and many more over-used quotes.
High Fidelity (2000)
Starring: John Cusack, Jack Black
Director: Stephen Frears
A movie about relationships, told from the point of view of a man! Plus, it’s set in a record store.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Starring: George Clooney, John Turturro
Directed by: Joel Coen
A Coen Brothers comedy set in the deep south. Funny yokel hijinx plus great country and gospel soundtrack.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
Starring: Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett
Director: Wes Anderson
This movie has Bill Murray in it. I repeat, Bill Murray is in this movie.
Son of Rambow (2007)
Director: Garth Jennings
John and Meredith say this is “super cute”.
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def
Director: Michel Gondry
Michel Gondry’s third best movie. BUT it has those funny movie re-do scenes plus Jack Black.
The Morgan Sass-Selection:
Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
Old people arguing = Oscars.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
No this isn’t the funny Mel Brooks one, but trust us it’s still good.
Outbreak (1995)
Every year nine biology class raves: Outbreak is not to be missed.
Deep Impact (1998)
This movie predicts the future because it has a black president. Hopefully not because everyone dies from a comet.
